Lone Cricket Productions is continually honored to work with world-renowned chamber musicians like Aeolus Quartet and Jasper Quartet, featured here. When filming musical performances, we like to cross-backlight the performers to bring them to the front of the frame. In these pieces, we use Mole Richardson 1k and Arri 650-watt tungsten lamps to establish depth and volume. Shadow creates drama, which we love, but it can often look harsh on the subjects’ faces. To fix that, we use the Kino Flo Freestyle 41 to soften the contrast while still keeping it dynamic with gradation. Visually, our main focus is on making the frame look beautiful. We mount four Blackmagic 6k Pocket Cinema Cameras (BMPCC6k) on tripods and a crane to capture subtle movements, close-ups of the performers, and dramatic establishing shots of the group as a whole. Everything is then filmed in 4K so that when the film is ready for release, viewers can enjoy the performance in high-definition 1080p. Above everything else though, the music takes center stage. For top-notch professional sound design, we work with independent audio production companies like Sanco Lighting and Sound, who spot-mic each individual instrument, allowing for detailed mixing in post-production. To capture the main sound, the industry-standard technique of stereo pair is used, which records full left and right surround sound.
