The Nonagon
Embarking on a rather ambitious journey, I chose to design a fun, complex, and challenging form for my first build in my forest. The floor design is a Nonagon, a nine sided polygon with equal sides and angles. When adding another nonagon at the same size but rotated by 20 degrees and raised by any desired height, the corners of each angle line up with the center of the bases’ sides, creating a cascade of triangles on a slope, balancing between inward and outward movements. I wanted an open concept space with sound completely at the forefront. With an odd sided polygon there are no parallel square walls, creating a full bodied, acoustic sphere. With 95% of this design focused around recording and playing music, there are also a few traditional living accommodations such as the loft space with a bed nestled up in the trees. Most of the functional elements for off-grid living have been relayed to a small bathroom hut and a van conversion down below on the property.

The Bathroom Hut
Given the massive endeavor that has been constructing the Nonagon, I decided to design a much simpler structure for the functional bathroom hut. With speed in mind, a lean-to style roof on a rectangle with creative window designs suited well. Currently water is shipped in from my van conversion, though I am designing and assembling the components for proper rain water collection. Off-grid living is a long process, full of endless educational moments, fully embodying patience, acceptance, and gratitude.

The rustic look of the two shades of pine tar - natural, satisfying, and of the forest
